Pet Commands

Pet commands separate a controlled night defense from chaos in Taming Defense. BaseBuddies lists these defaults on the official Roblox experience page: V selects all pets, Q follows, T attacks, U guards, Z stays, and 1–6 pick pet slots or linked skills. Mastering those keys matters as much as taming a strong creature—an S-tier Tank Beast on Follow instead of Guard will wander off while your walls collapse.

This guide explains each command, when to use it during the day/night loop, and how hotbar slots interact with building and combat keys. Read How to Play for full movement and build controls, then return here before The Lich begins hunting on Day 20.

Swap hotbar pages with X when you bind more than six actions. Shift toggles shift lock for camera-stable commanding while strafing.

V — Select All Pets

Press V when you need every active tame to receive the next order together. Common scenarios:

  • Sunset prep — select all, then issue Guard on shared choke before the wave timer.
  • Recall — pull pets off a bad chase during night without clicking each slot.
  • Co-op handoff — one player selects all while another repairs outer walls.

Select All does not replace slot precision. After grouping, you may still press 1–6 to micro a single pet breaking formation.

Q — Follow

Follow attaches pets to your movement path. Use it by day when exploring for new tames in How to Tame Pets, hauling resources, or retreating to base before darkness. At night, Follow is risky near open map edges—enemies aggro onto your leash line and pull pets away from walls.

Pair Follow with periodic Z — Stay when you need pets to hold a midpoint while you craft inside the base.

T — Attack

Attack sends selected pets to engage hostiles. Strong with Glass DPS and AoE Cleaver archetypes from the Pet Tier List when enemies funnel through one lane. Weak when pets outrun your vision and die in the dark.

Recommended rhythm for aggressive nights: T to engage, watch health, then Z to stop overchase before the pack splits. In co-op, one player Attack-kites while another Guard-holds the choke.

U — Guard

Guard is the backbone of Build Tier List S-tier early layouts. Assign Guard Sentinel or Tank Beast pets to the narrowest path so melee waves stall while you repair. Click the ground near the choke after selecting the pet or slot—pets should face incoming spawn direction, not your crafting bench.

Re-issue Guard after major wall breaches; pets sometimes retain stale positions when geometry changes.

Z — Stay

Stay halts movement immediately. Use it to:

  • Prevent Follow breaks when you open inventory (B) mid-fight
  • Hold interior fallback lines while you outer-repair during a lull
  • Reset pets that ignored Guard after collision glitches

Stay is not passive healing—pets still take damage. Combine with Support Healer roles only if your roster includes that archetype.

Hotbar slots 1–6

Number keys 1–6 select individual pet slots or bound skills depending on your current hotbar page (X to swap). Best practices:

  1. Put your main Guard pet on slot 1 for muscle memory.
  2. Reserve 2 for burst Attack pets.
  3. Map 3–4 to situational tames you toggle mid-wave.
  4. Leave 5–6 for items or skills until late game fills the roster.

Slots are per hotbar page—document your layout once and keep it across sessions so Lich nights do not become guesswork.

Day vs night command habits

Daytime: Follow for exploration, Stay while crafting, open G to feed and slot new tames. Return with repair mats before sunset.

Nighttime: Guard on chokes first, Attack only on confirmed leaks, V to recall overextenders, Stay to reset. Avoid opening G during peak waves unless safe inside inner keep.

Night defense command timing

Common mistakes

  • Leaving pets on Follow during full-base holds
  • Attacking without a wall funnel, letting Glass DPS die instantly
  • Forgetting to re-select slot 1 after using V for group orders
  • Binding six pets with no Guard role before Day 20

Fix mistakes by pairing commands with stage advice on Best Pets by Stage.

Commands are free power. A mid-tier tame on Guard outperforms a rare pet left on Follow every night of the week.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What key selects all pets in Taming Defense?

Press V to select all pets. Follow with Q, T, U, or Z to issue a group Follow, Attack, Guard, or Stay command.

What is the difference between Guard and Stay?

Guard assigns a pet to hold and fight near a chosen defensive point. Stay freezes movement immediately without assigning a guard zone—useful for stopping chases.

How do pet hotbar slots 1–6 work?

Keys 1–6 select individual pet slots or linked skills on your current hotbar page. Press X to swap hotbar pages if you bind more than six actions.

Which pet command is best for night defense?

Guard on choke points is the default best command for night defense. Use Attack for cleanup and V plus Stay to recall pets that overextend.

How do I open the pet menu?

Press G to open the Pet Menu for feeding, roster review, and slot assignment. G is separate from the V/Q/T/U/Z command keys.
