Taming Defense How to Survive The Lich

Day 20 changes everything — prepare your base, pets, and nightly routine before The Lich hunts again.

Survive The Lich

The Lich is the defining threat in Taming Defense on Roblox. BaseBuddies triggers the boss hunt on Day 20, and after that first appearance The Lich returns every night. Standard wall segments and untrained pets that carried you through Day 15 will collapse if you treat Night 20 like any other raid.

This guide explains what changes at the Day 20 threshold, how to structure defenses, which pet orders matter, and how to recover when a night goes wrong. Read How to Play for early-game pacing, Base Building for layout fundamentals, and How to Tame so your squad is ready before the deadline.

What happens on Day 20

Before Day 20, nights spawn escalating waves of standard enemies. The pattern teaches repair timing, ammo crafting, and basic pet rotation. Day 20 adds The Lich to the night spawn table — a boss-tier unit that targets structures and players with higher damage than regular raiders.

After the first Lich night, expect The Lich every subsequent night in addition to normal waves. Days remain your window to repair, expand, tame backups, and farm Gold for upgrades. Ignoring a single daytime prep cycle can cascade into a base wipe three nights later.

Pre-Day 20 checklist

Complete this list by sunset on Day 19:

  • Closed perimeter — No open gaps wider than one temporary choke. See Base Building.
  • Layered walls — Double thickness at the main gate where The Lich focuses fire.
  • Three or more pets — At least two on U (Guard), one on T (Attack) for focus fire. Details in Pet Commands.
  • Repair stockpile — Materials for two full wall rebuilds without daytime gathering.
  • Fallback room — An inner box or tower you can retreat to if the outer ring falls.
  • Controls rehearsedShift shift lock, R aim mode, 1–6 item slots from Controls.

If you are short on Gold, redeem remaining active codes before Day 19 ends.

Base layout for Lich nights

The Lich punishes flat bases with multiple entry points. Shrink the front line to one main gate with side walls thick enough to absorb splash damage. Use X snap toggle and R rotation while building so segments align without gaps — misaligned snap is a common leak point under boss pressure.

Add an inner kill box: a U-shaped corridor where Guard pets face a single direction while you attack from elevation or a window slot. Compare advanced layouts on the Build Tier List once basics hold.

Lighting and line of sight matter less than geometry. A narrow path slows The Lich approach and keeps AoE from hitting your entire pet squad at once.

Pet strategy against The Lich

Guard tanks absorb melee swings on the gate line. Position them before sunset — re-issuing U after The Lich spawns wastes critical seconds.

Attack pets focus The Lich when it enters range. Toggle T on your highest DPS tame; avoid spreading damage across adds unless your walls are stable.

Stay snipers on Z watch flanks. Some nights spawn secondary mobs that bypass the main gate if pets are over-concentrated.

Select All (V) rallies a retreat to the inner fallback when outer walls hit critical health. Sacrificing outer layers is acceptable if the inner core and player survive.

Review Best Pets for species with high HP or anti-boss skills. Mid-tier pets with correct orders outperform rare pets left on Follow.

Player role during the fight

You are not passive during Lich nights. Use M1 for primary attacks, R to aim ranged weapons, and Shift shift lock to track the boss without losing camera control. Cycle 1–6 for healing items, explosives, or structure repair tools mid-fight.

Ctrl run repositioning saves you when The Lich breaks through. Do not face-tank — kiting into pet lines lets Guard units re-aggro.

If you fall, recovery depends on pets holding the line long enough for respawn or revive mechanics available in your current patch. Check Update 1 for mechanic changes.

Every night after Day 20

The Lich’s nightly return means defense is a routine, not a one-time event. Build a sunset ritual:

  1. Repair all segments to full.
  2. Reassign pet orders — never assume yesterday’s U positions persist.
  3. Top off consumables in hotbar slots.
  4. Close the gate manually if the game requires F interact.
  5. Watch the spawn direction from your fallback room.

Days 21–50 test consistency. Days 50–100 demand economic scaling — farm Gold by day so Ruby and premium upgrades from the Tier List stay on pace for the 365-day goal.

When a night goes wrong

Outer wall down is recoverable if the inner core holds. Inner breach means grab resources, trigger V retreat, and sacrifice outer pets if necessary to save the player character.

If The Lich kills your run entirely, note which layer failed: geometry, pet orders, or personal positioning. Most resets are fixable with Base Building adjustments rather than better rare pets.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What day does The Lich start hunting in Taming Defense?

The Lich begins hunting on Day 20. After the first appearance, The Lich returns every night for the rest of your run.

How do I prepare for the first Lich night?

By Day 19, close your perimeter, double-layer the main gate, assign Guard and Attack pets, stock repair materials, and build an inner fallback room.

Which pet command is best against The Lich?

Use U Guard on tanks at the gate and T Attack on your highest damage pet. Z Stay on flank watchers prevents bypass adds.

Does The Lich spawn with other enemies?

Yes. Expect normal night waves alongside The Lich. Layered walls and choke points help manage both boss damage and adds.
